Hojicha is a Japanese roasted green tea made by roasting bancha leaves and twigs over charcoal.
In Japan Hojicha is one of country’s most commonly enjoyed beverages.
The roasting process leaves the tea with lower caffeine levels compared to other green teas making it a popular choice to accompany meals.
The tea leaves are made in a similar method to that of Sencha. First the tea leaves are steamed and dried. Next the dried leaves are roasted over a low temperature that leaves a slightly sweet taste and its unique aroma. The roasting process produces a tea with a reddish color with a very unique flavor.
